Quartz Composer tutorial #7: Awesome Line Drawer from goto10 on Vimeo.

This is a tutorial on how to use the Kineme GL Tools to create a simple line drawing composition.

You'll need the following plugins and macros:
kineme.net/QuartzComposerPatches/StructureTools/0.1
kineme.net/release/AlphaBlendMode/10
kineme.net/release/GLTools/16
hybridvisuals.nl/downloads/vdmx-mouse-macro/

Installation instructions can be found on the respective sites.

As mentioned, I really would love to hear your feedback on the new style of commentary. I feel it's a lot less boring, but I hope you can still follow everything. Let me know ;-)

The patch is available here: hybridvisuals.nl/uploads/awesomelinedrawer.qtz.zip

Quartz Composer tutorial 6: Dynamic Slideshow from goto10 on Vimeo.

Quick tutorial on how to make a dynamically updating slideshow out of a folder with images.

Note that although I'm using VDMX as an example QC host application here, this setup should work with any VJ software that can load QC patches and allows access to published inputs, such as for instance CoGe.

Since the patch does nothing without the accompanying image files, it's not available for download. Please contact me through my website if you want to have it.

VDMX Tutorial - Basic multi layer animation from 2bitpunk on Vimeo.

fter having a technology meltdown and multiple hard drive failures my machine is happy once again and now SSD based which is the killer upgrade for any video mixer/editor.

So in celebration of having a stable workstation/rig here's a simple introduction on how to use VDMX for animation. This example uses 5 elements (1 background and 4 sliders), the sliders movement is restricted to one axis and the animation is generated using a waveform.

And here's a tip … replace or rotate your production drives as often as possible and make sure you have a backup :-) And start saving for SSD replacements!

Credits: Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, Prefuse 73

P.S. I hope you noticed my controls go up to 11 as all good knobs and faders should => This Is Spinal Tap (1984) ;-)

VDMX Tutorial 2 from vjwunderkind on Vimeo.

This is second VDMX tutorial showing how to make black and white clips colourful. Background: I was vjing on an LED screen with very low screen resolution, so I decided to go with simple geometry. To be more flexible, I kept most of the animations black and white. You can purchase the animations onvjloops.tv - here they are:

VDMX Tutorial 1 from vjwunderkind on Vimeo.

This is a tutorial giving a quick overview of Vidvox's great software VDMX. It was originally created for my Master students in Luxemburg but I figured I might as well share it with the rest of the world ;-) . The only problem is, I keep saying "follow the mouse" but the mouse pointer isn't visible, so you have to listen carefully where I am going to click and watch the screen closely as well. Enjoy!

Users familiar with older versions of Resolume will see many things that are familiar to them but they will also notice some big changes in Resolume Avenue.

We will run through the main changes here but if you want more detailed information on how to do what you used to do in Resolume 2.x, there is a whole Appendix just for you.

For many, the most exciting thing is that Resolume is now available for Mac (OSX) as well as Windows.

The most obvious difference in the software itself is that Resolume Avenue supports audio as well as video. We strongly recommend that even if you don't currently use any audio in your performances, have a play with the audio-visual side of Resolume Avenue - there are all kinds of creative possibilities there. And it's loads of fun!

The next big change is that the fixed interface used by earlier versions of Resolume has become much more flexible. You are no longer limited to three layers and you can have as many clips in a deck as you care to scroll through.

Effects have also become more flexible in Resolume Avenue - you can stack as many effects as you like on clips, layers or the whole composition. This makes for some awesome combinations of effects.

Increasing the flexibility of the software does mean that there is more to pack into the interface, which means it has had to change somewhat. The new approach might seem unfamiliar at first but, don't worry, it doesn't take too long to get used to.

Resolume Avenue 3 is an audiovisual performance tool. It enables us to play video, audio and audiovisual clips, mix them with each other, apply effects to them and output the results either for a live performance or for recording.

Many people who use Resolume are VJs. They mix video clips live to accompany music. These artists may not use the audio features of Resolume Avenue 3 but they will definitely be hammering the video mixing options and OpenGL accelerated video effects.

Other artists use Resolume for audio-visual performances, using the BPM matching features to synchronise clips with each other and then layering them up to create a complete piece.

While live performance is what most people use Resolume for, it is also useful for many other projects that need to deal with audio-visual content. The midi and Open Sound Control options make it suitable for scripted shows and installations.

Sometimes it's just fun to experiment with clips and effects and see what happens!

Resolume Avenue 3 Getting Started from Resolume on Vimeo.

Audiovisual Playback

Play Quicktime and AVI video files with audio or combine any .mov or .avi video file with any .wav or .aiff audio file.

Flash Playback

Resolume plays all your Flash animations including AS2 and AS3 scripting. Flash can display text input from Resolume and with parameters you can gain even more control over your animations. Watch Flash Features Video.

Audiovisual Effects

Resolume 3 supports both VST audio effects and FreeFrameGL openGL video effects. Use them separately or combine them to create exciting new audiovisual effects. You can use as many effects as you like on clips, layers and the entire composition.

3D Compositing
Freely position, scale and rotate your clips and layers or even the entire composition.

OpenGL Accelerated
The entire video engine is running in 32 bit floating point precision on the video card's GPU so you can use alpha channels and masks and get the best image quality possible on today's hardware.

Global BPM Tempo
Everything can be linked to the global (Beats Per Minute) tempo to create a fully synchronized audiovisual performance. Automatically pitch the audio and video and synchronize parameter automation. Use the beat snap function to trigger clips in sync with the beat.

Output and Preview Monitors
With the preview monitor you preview a clip or layer and configure it so it looks and sounds just the way you like it before you play it.

Flexible Interface
The Resolume 3 interface scales to the size of your monitor. Use it on a 1280x800 laptop screen or on a 30 Inch 2560x1600 resolution screen. The more screen-real-estate you have the more comfortable it is to use any number of clips and layers.

Deutsch Français Español Català Nederlands
The Resolume 3 interface and help is available in English, German, French, Spanish, Catalan and Dutch.

Audio Analysis
Resolume 3 can do audio FFT analysis to make any parameter bounce to the music. Animate the size, rotation or position of a clip or make effects dance to the beat.

DXV Codec
Our DXV QuickTime video codec is the fastest codec available for Resolume. It let's you work effortlessly with a lot of layers and high resolution video. Because it does all the playback on the videocard's GPU it's faster than any other codec. More info

Video mapping
With the keystone plugin and masks your screen does not have to be rectangular anymore. You can map the video onto any object or surface. Combined with multi-screen output you can even project on multiple surfaces or objects.

Multi-screen
Because Resolume Avenue can output any resolution it works perfectly with the Matrox DualHead and TrippleHead to deliver multi-screen performances.

MIDI & OSC
Use MIDI from any device or software to control the entire interface. Want more precision & flexibility? Resolume 3 can receive OSC (Open Sound Control) messages too!

Crossfader
Assign any layer to the A or B bus of the crossfader and mix it just like you do on a DJ mixer but now with audio and video.

Cross-platform
Because Resolume 3 uses cross-platform technologies like openGL and C++ it runs on both Mac OSX 10.4.9 or later and Windows XP & Vista.

Minimum System Requirements
Windows: ATI Radeon 9600 or better. NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 or better. 1GB RAM.
Mac: Intel processor. Quartz Extreme graphics card (Resolume Avenue is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors). 1GB RAM.

Major new goodies include, from left to right, mask blends, keystone plug-ins for your projection mapping enjoyment, and effects like the lovely Cube Tile.

Resolume in 2009 set out a new course for the visual performance software, and more than many of its live visual rivals, was particularly ambitious about melding audio and visual media. Fortunately, that ambition has been accompanied by a steady stream of updates refining functionality and stability. The latest is release 3.1.3; new in this build:

  • Better external MIDI sync clock, ideal for working with software like Ableton, Traktor (more on that in a moment)
  • New effects and sources: Shift Glitch (fx), Strobe (fx and source), Static (fx and source), Cube Tiles (fx)
  • Mask Blend Mode (yeah, about time)
  • Video mapping aka projection mapping feature, with new keystone plug-ins
  • Grab a PNG from video quickly
  • Load multiple videos quickly, automatically dropping them on layers
  • Improved stability, fixes, z rotation fix
  • Switch decks without interrupting video
  • Improved OSC support
  • Better support for NVIDIA graphics cards, Windows 7 / Vista, and many other fixes and improvements

Resolume Avenue 3.1.3 Released [Resolume Blog]

But enough of these changelogs — let’s talk about how to use MIDI sync. Below, a tutorial from the Resolume folks demonstrating MIDI sync with Ableton Live (though the same technique could be applied to any MIDI Clock source you like – even hardware). Anecdotally, MIDI clock support in Live has been one of the complaints I’ve heard most often from Ableton users, but then, it’s nice to see Resolume working on it.

For a written tutorial for Windows and Mac – again, relevant to any MIDI software, not just Live, though Live is the example:
